Creedmoor Improves Lake Rogers Park, Creates a True Community Space

With many enhancements complete, Lake Rogers now stands out as a crown jewel showcasing the beauty of Creedmoor and Granville County.

For decades, as residents and visitors have entered Creedmoor on NC-56, they have been welcomed to the community by the picturesque Lake Rogers that winds along the western boundary of the city limits. The lake has always been a destination for locals to fish or enjoy a shaded picnic, but recent efforts by the City of Creedmoor and its citizens will turn this beautiful natural resource into a family recreation area woven into the fabric of the community.

Over much of Creedmoor’s history, a waste water treatment plant was also part of the tableau that greeted those driving into town. Since the antiquated treatment plant was decommissioned, the City of Creedmoor saw the opportunity to complete a full demolition and improve the aesthetics of this important gateway. Creedmoor officials knew that demolition of the waste water treatment plant and restoration of the natural landscape could allow comprehensive access to the lake’s western shore and the wooded areas previously cut-off from public access. Ultimately, the City recognized that this was an opportunity to triple the land usable for recreation in the park.

Demolition of the treatment plant was completed in 2018 and the City contracted with Summit Design and Engineering to provide a master design for improvements to Lake Rogers Park. Summit Design presented their plan and renderings for improved facilities to the Creedmoor Parks and Recreation Committee, and then finally to the Board of Commissioners.

After initial improvements to the park facilities, including a new floating boat dock and a rebuilt fishing pier, the Board of Commissioners decided to tackle the approved master plan in phases. Phase I, which was completed in the spring of 2019, consisted of demolition of an existing picnic shelter followed by construction of a new shelter, a new sign monument at the park entrance, and improvements to pedestrian access. Phase II, which was completed in November 2019, consists of a boardwalk providing pedestrian access from the current park to the western shore of the lake, fishing platforms, and walking trails. Future phases are being planned, which could provide the opportunity to pave the existing gravel parking lot and add additional parking, build a small amphitheater, install new playground equipment, and pave connecting walkways through the eastern lake-front area.

Once complete, Lake Rogers will truly stand out as a crown jewel showcasing the beauty of Creedmoor and Granville County. As a growing community located just on the edge of Raleigh and Durham, expanding recreational opportunities for our current and future citizens is critical to developing Creedmoor into an all-around inclusive, attractive, and progressive community.

Lake Rogers is now a destination for those wanting to spend an afternoon fishing, go for a paddle on the tranquil water, sit on the boardwalk and watch the sunset, enjoy a picnic, a day at the playground, or a quiet walk through the woods.
