PLEASANT GARDEN, NC – Sept. 2019
The Town of Pleasant Garden is known, primarily, for its recreation. During 2019’s spring and fall sports season, we had approximately 2,000 children involved. We offer T-ball, baseball and softball at our newly-acquired Community Center. In addition, we offer recreation league soccer. We rely on hundreds of volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to make our programs successful. It’s what we do!
In 2014, we applied for our first-ever PARTF Grant from the State. We were denied both in 2014 and 2015. As they say, three times is a charm because in 2016 we were awarded close to $250,000.00. With those funds, along with the Town’s match, we were able to construct two playgrounds – one on Town Hall grounds and one at the soccer fields, an ADA walking trail, a greenway with exercise stations, an 18 hole disk golf course, two dog parks (one for small dogs and another for large dogs) and a senior–friendly activities courtyard featuring bocce ball, horseshoes and shuffleboard for seniors.
Prior to 2017, the Pleasant Garden Community Center was run by its then-volunteer Board of Directors. Their own children had already phased out of the baseball and softball programs when they came to the Town Council offering the Community Center, originally built in 1965, and its property. The facility and grounds needed much attention. We began the facelift process in addition to applying for a PARTF Grant from the State. We were able to use the tax value of the grounds as our matching portion. In 2018, we were awarded that grant. Fast forward to today and the grounds have been fully restored to tournament level. What was once a vanishing sport in Pleasant Garden has now been revitalized. It has also become a gathering place for adults. Last spring and this fall we have had approximately ten co-ed teams competing in fast-pitch softball. In addition, we offer senior activities and events in the refurbished Community Center
“We take great pride in our Town,” said Mayor Carla Strickland. “We believe that children are our future. Pleasant Garden provides a safe, family-orientated environment for all ages. Come visit our Town!”
