Demolition Brings Hope to New Bern Businesses

June 21, 2017

Jeff Ruggieri, director of New Bern Development Services, said he has heard nothing but positive things about the demolition of Days Hotel. “The site is pretty clean and safe now,” Ruggieri said. “I’ve heard a lot of people say it gives them hope again.” On Broad Street, and next to the other side of the empty lot, Alex Frelier, owner of New Bern Arts & Wellness Center, said he feels encouraged when he drives into his parking lot and is no longer in the shadow of the old hotel. “It was a reminder of past ailments in our environment, in our city, and now it’s more of a symbol of our future possibilities and that is very encouraging. We think it is a lot more welcoming. We think the Five Points area has become a lot more welcoming and people can now dream a little more about the future and the possibilities.”
