They bring people together in celebration of success or some aspect of shared culture. They encourage moments of collective effervescence and, sometimes, they bring money into the local economy. Festivals have proliferated in Winston-Salem in the past few years. We’ve seen some come and go, and others combine and change shape. Salute!, a wine fest, merged this year with the Texas Pete Culinary Festival to form Spirits of Summer, which celebrates local wine, beer, food and music. It’s only natural that the self-styled City of Arts and Innovation would have its share of art and entertainment festivals, and that those events would attract cultural tourists and day-trippers.
