Downtown Wilmington Saw 46 New Businesses in 2017

March 23, 2018

If viewed as a sprawling shopping center of independently owned shops and attractions, downtown Wilmington is New Hanover County’s largest taxpayer, according to Ed Wolverton, president of Wilmington Downtown Inc. At WDI’s annual downtown economic series luncheon Thursday, Wolverton told the crowd that, in 2017, the downtown area accounted for $496.6 million in taxable property value, topping the county’s top taxpayers, Duke Energy and Corning Inc. The revenue marks a 16 percent increase over last year, something that drew applause from the crowd of more than 350 assembled in the Wilmington Convention Center. “I was stunned by that (growth), quite frankly,” Wolverton said.
