A handful of downtown businesses want an attractive new hub for outdoor dining and drinking. And that’s right up Elizabeth City’s alley — literally. Elizabeth City staff and private contractors partially reopened Pailin’s Alley this weekend, providing a cleaned-up, newly fenced off space for patrons of Hoppin’ Johnz and Coasters Downtown Draught House, Elizabeth City Downtown Inc. Executive Director Deborah Malenfant reported Friday. The full project should be done this week, she added. The hope for the city and the business community is that the alleyway could eventually provide outdoor space for dozens of patrons for five businesses, she explained. In addition to Hoppin’ Johnz and Coasters, Island Breeze Grill plans to use the space, as does the Ghost Harbor Brewing Company, a microbrewery, when it opens this fall. Malenfant added the alleyway would also be available to whomever next occupies the building last used by Thumpers Downtown Bar and Grill.
