The future of Morganton is bright. During the last few months, Morganton Main Street Department has hosted focus group meetings as well as a weeklong charrette to invite residents to give their input on what they’d like to see in downtown Morganton in years to come. The department hired Stantec Consulting Group of Charlotte to help facilitate a plan for the next 15 years of downtown development. During the charrette two weeks ago, droves of residents attended workshops that looked at downtown housing, arts, retail needs, building reuse, greenway connectors and future uses for the old courthouse lawn and much more. Morganton Main Street Director Sharon Jablonski told The News Herald in March that that outgoing masterplan was successful for downtown and helped to “energize” the downtown area by bringing quality downtown events that have bolstered Morganton’s reputation. Jablonski said the previous plan led to the downtown movie theater, The Morganton Trading Company, improvements to the 400 Union Square block as well as improvements to the city streetscape.
