Everybody Loves Sylva: ‘Three Billboards’ a Nationwide Hit

What movie made more money per theater this past weekend than “Thor: Ragnarok” and only slight less than the Julia Roberts crowd-pleaser “Wonder”? That would be “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the Fox Searchlight film shot last year in Sylva, Black Mountain, Clyde, Maggie Valley and other Western North Carolina locations. It grossed $7,171 per location, according to, a number bested only by the the weekend’s top three movies, “Coco,” “Justice League” and “Wonder.”
