Gate City Road Improvements Spruce Up City’s ‘Front Door’

Contractors are putting the finishing touches on $13.3 million in “streetscape” improvements along West Gate City Boulevard, hoping to inject new economic life into what once was one of the city’s more successful commercial corridors. City transportation leaders used municipal bond money approved in a 2008 referendum to spruce up sidewalks, crosswalks, street lighting and other features aimed at enhancing appearance and pedestrian safety. It’s logical to assume that in time, other business might be attracted to the area by its streamlined, more spacious street design, Fischer said.
