In Mt. Airy, Local Recreation More Than Fun and Games

Everyone knows about the health benefits associated with recreational activities and the fun and spirit of competition these can provide, but recreation also increasingly is becoming big business in Surry County. This includes visitors being attracted to an abundance of local facilities such as greenways, trout streams and canoe access points; the fact quality recreational offerings are helping to draw new businesses and residents to the county; and the direct economic impact from those employed in the industry. Then there is the quality-of-life role local recreation programs play in the community for folks of all ages which defy dollar signs. “I don’t think we can calculate with accuracy the local impact,” Mount Airy Parks and Recreation Director Catrina Alexander said of the collective economic and many other benefits realized from various activities and facilities.
