Council members have been working for the past two years on a project improve N.C. 711, which is Third Street as it passes through town. They say the portion of the highway inside Pembroke often gets congested because it can’t handle the heavy traffic caused by the growing community. The council has requested funding from the N.C. Department of Transportation, but the state wants the town to come up with another $250,000 before its make any decisions. The town council already has committed to allocating $1,177,899 for the project. The project’s estimated total cost is more than $2 million.
