The Rise of the Mixed Use Project in Wilmington

Growth in Wilmington has a new model — the mixed-use project. That’s the message a trio of developers shared at Tuesday’s Power Breakfast in downtown Wilmington, sponsored by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal. Combined, the developers’ three projects — CenterPoint, The Avenue on Military Cutoff Road and River Place downtown — are valued at $553 million. All three projects combine retail, dining, office space and homes, while CenterPoint and The Avenue will feature flagship hotels. The mixed-use model is gaining popularity with developers nationally and locally, and CenterPoint developer David Swain said these are the types of projects that will define the future of living, shopping and working in Wilmington. “A vibrant city must have the ability to grow,” Swain said. “A community that does not have that vibrancy withers.”
