Whirligig fest a bonanza for Wilson businesses

November 16, 2018

The N.C. Whirligig Festival brought an estimated 50,000 people to historic downtown Wilson on Nov. 3 and 4, which had a big effect on local businesses’ bottom line. We actually did really good. It was like Black Friday crowds on Saturday and real steady stream of customers on Sunday. Both days were really good,” said Downtown Boutique owner Brooke Best. “Saturday alone was every bit of triple sales for us, if not more. It was just a fabulous day and weekend for us.” Festival organizer Theresa Mathis said shifting the footprint closer to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park meant about a 30 percent expansion with about 50 additional vendors. “I think what I was most pleased with was the fact that every street was packed,” she said. “We did not know if one street would have less traffic than another with the new layout, but all the streets were full and everyone loved being able to walk the loop rather than back and forth.”
