Wilson got a good look at the very near future Thursday with the grand opening of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. Cars lined the streets and filled parking lots as hundreds of people flocked downtown to see Wilson’s newest, free city park. Families set up folding chairs and spread out blankets under the shadow of the whirligigs and listened to the music of Fireside Collective. Others waited in line to purchase dinner from food vendors. Some sat on benches or ventured inside 217 Brew Works just across the street. And even as the sun set and it grew dark, they walked around reading the names of the whirligigs and all looked up and watched Simpson’s creations turning and spinning and putting on a show.
