The most important thing about Gene Merrit’s planned development isn’t its eight retail spaces or upstairs nightclub. It’s the location: a long-vacant lot at 200 Market St. in downtown Wilmington. “I’m a big believer in infill development,” Merritt told a crowd at the Coastline Convention Center Thursday. “I do not believe that the highest and best use of vacant land in downtown Wilmington is parking.” Merritt was one of four local developers who detailed upcoming projects at Wilmington Downtown, Inc.’s “A Growler of Projects” Thursday, part of its annual Downtown Economic Series. From a hotel to loft-style homes, shopping and office space, the projects will all make use of neglected spaces around downtown.
