Work Begins on $12M Whirligig Station Development

April 10, 2017

Waukeshaw is planning a $12 million redevelopment of the historic property to include a restaurant and shops as well as apartments for residents. “The more we improve historic downtown Wilson, the more it is attractive for businesses to come here,” she said. “That means creating jobs and getting residents to move here to frequent those businesses. As we improve the buildings in downtown, we’re growing the tax base and bringing in tourists, which infuse our community with additional dollars.” McCormack said the size of the Whirligig Station project will spur other redevelopment. “There were already some smaller projects going on, but a bigger one can be a catalyst for future economic development, bringing more people to live and shop downtown,” he said. “I’ve been doing adaptive reuse projects for a long time and this is one of the most exciting ones I’ve been involved with.”
